H&R Chempharm

The brief: from outdated facilities to a workplace fit for the future

H&R Chempharm identified the need to significantly upgrade their existing Canalside office as part of Phase 1 of their wider ‘Batson Project’ – an ongoing programme of improvements across their Tipton site.

The existing office environment was no longer fit for purpose. The space was dated, with oil-stained finishes, poor ventilation leading to unpleasant odours from adjacent lab areas, and little separation between office and operational spaces.

There was also a clear need to modernise facilities to align with wider company standards, improve staff wellbeing, and create an environment capable of attracting new talent entering the business.

Accolade Workspace was appointed to transform the space into a clean, modern and professional working environment, while setting the benchmark for future phases across the site.

Clearpath methodology in action

A key part of the project was guiding H&R Chempharm through Accolade Workspace’s Clearpath methodology. Over an extended period, this structured approach helped the client to clearly define their priorities, balancing immediate operational needs with longer-term aspirations for the site.

Working collaboratively, we supported the team in establishing a realistic budget, identifying the most critical upgrades required to make the space fit for purpose, and distinguishing these from additional ‘nice to have’ enhancements.

This phased and considered approach – developed over a six-year journey – ensured that investment was made in the right areas at the right time, ultimately delivering maximum impact while maintaining flexibility for future phases of the Batson Project.

The Solution

Working closely with H&R Chempharm, Accolade Workspace developed and delivered a full refurbishment of the Canalside office, addressing both functional challenges and overall user experience.

  • Reconfiguration and new facilities

The layout was reworked to create a more structured and practical environment, including:

  • 3 new private offices
  • 1 new meeting room with glazed partitions
  • Dedicated meeting booths for Zoom calls and private conversations

These additions allow for a range of working styles, reducing noise in the open office and avoiding unnecessary use of full meeting rooms for short calls.

  • Welfare and compliance upgrades

Existing male and female WCs were stripped out and replaced with:

  • 4 unisex WCs
  • 1 fully accessible disabled WC

This not only improved the quality and usability of facilities but ensured the space is fully DDA compliant and more inclusive for all staff.

  • Air quality and environment

A key challenge was addressing odours from nearby lab areas. New air conditioning and ventilation systems were installed to significantly improve air quality and create a more comfortable working environment.

  • Modern finishes and workplace standards

The space was fully refreshed with:

  • New, energy-efficient lighting and switching
  • Height-adjustable desks to align with wider company standards
  • Updated finishes throughout to remove the previous industrial feel
  • Branding elements to reinforce company identity

  • First impressions and access

The entrance experience was enhanced through the installation of new balustrades and refurbishment of the stairwell, creating a safer and more professional arrival point into the office.

  • Delivered by an in-house team

All works were delivered by Accolade Workspace’s in-house team, ensuring consistency, quality control and a smooth delivery within an active site environment.

The Result

The transformation of the Canalside office is significant. What was once a dated, uncomfortable and poorly functioning space has been reimagined into a modern, clean and highly usable workplace.

Staff now benefit from improved air quality, better facilities, and a variety of spaces that support focused work, collaboration and private communication. Thoughtful design elements, including glazed partitions and planting, help to bring light, openness and a sense of quality to the environment.

“The finished facilities are looking great and reflect the look and feel of an advanced UK manufacturing business in 2026.”

Kevin Boyce – Managing Director at H&R Chempharm

“The final result delivered a modern, professional environment, with smart use of space and thoughtful touches like glass partitions and planting bringing everything to life.”

Kim Borges – Engineering & Transformation Manager

Importantly, the upgraded environment helps position H&R Chempharm as a more attractive employer, particularly for new talent entering the workforce, while aligning the site more closely with the standards of the wider organisation.

As Phase 1 of the Batson Project, this refurbishment sets the tone for future improvements across the site, with further phases already planned.
